Getting Started with NDIS

Am I Eligible for NDIS Support?

Figuring out whether you or a loved one qualifies for the NDIS can feel overwhelming — especially when you are not sure where to start.

The good news is that you do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. At Spry Support Services, we help participants and families understand their options, whether they are brand new to the NDIS or already have a plan in place.

This page walks you through the basics of NDIS eligibility and what to do next — no jargon, no pressure.

Understanding the NDIS
Plain English Explanation

What Is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program that provides support to Australians living with a permanent and significant disability.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the NDIS creates an individual plan for each participant — funding the supports and services that help them live more independently, pursue their goals, and participate in their community.

Funding can be used across a wide range of supports, including daily living assistance, accommodation, therapy, community participation, and more.

The NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), and Spry Support Services is a registered NDIS provider here to help you make the most of your plan.

The Key Criteria

NDIS Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the NDIS, you generally need to meet all four of the following criteria. If you are unsure whether you qualify, our team can help you work through your situation.

You may be eligible for the NDIS if you:

  • Are under 65 years of age when you first apply for the NDIS
  • Are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder living in Australia
  • Have a permanent disability caused by a neurological, intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychiatric condition
  • Require support to carry out daily activities now, or early intervention support that will reduce your future support needs

Meeting these criteria does not guarantee approval, but it is a strong starting point. The NDIA assesses each application individually. If you are unsure, reach out to our team — we are happy to help you understand your options.

Not Sure?

Not Sure If You Qualify? Contact Us Anyway

Many people who are unsure about their eligibility are surprised to find they do qualify — or that there are other pathways available to them. We encourage you to reach out regardless.

You should still contact us if:
  • You have a disability but are unsure if it qualifies
  • You are a parent or carer of someone with a disability
  • You have been told you may not be eligible but want a second opinion
  • You are over 65 and want to understand your options
  • You already have an NDIS plan but are not sure how to use it
  • You are a support coordinator looking for a provider
  • You just want to understand what support is available

There is no obligation and no cost to speak with our team. We are here to help you find the right path forward.

You must be under 65 years of age when you first apply for the NDIS. If you are 65 or older, you may be eligible for support through the aged care system instead. Our team can help point you in the right direction regardless of your age.

A permanent disability is one that is likely to be lifelong and significantly impacts your ability to carry out everyday activities. This can include physical, intellectual, neurological, sensory, cognitive, or psychiatric conditions. The NDIA assesses each application individually, so it is worth applying even if you are unsure.

Absolutely. Eligibility decisions can sometimes be reviewed or appealed, and there may be other support pathways available to you. We encourage you to reach out so we can help you understand your options.
